Sails Up 4 Cancer isn’t even a year old, but the Mystic Charity has already wrapped up its first season in a big way—with a $10,000 check.
Last week the organization presented the check to their beneficiary Stand Up To Cancer, the national cancer research charity of which Sails Up 4 Cancer is a Dream Team member.
“I feel really proud of everyone here,” said Bob Davis, the CEO and Founder of Sails Up 4 Cancer, during the organization’s end of the season lunch at the .
Davis who after battling cancer himself was happy to announce that he is cancer-free following his most recent check-up.
While the board members celebrated the success of their first season they were quick to thank the local community for their support.
“The sailing community is always very supportive,” said Sails Up 4 Cancer Executive Vice President Jessica Morrissey. “They opened their arms to help us out. “I’m in tears over it, it’s tremendous.”
Davis established Sails Up 4 Cancer in December of 2010 as a way to use sailing to fund research for the education and prevention of all types of cancer. In June of 2011 the a regatta at the .
With their first fundraising season behind them the board is already focused on their feature, planning a March 31, 2011 event at the Mystic River Yacht Club that will include an art show profiling cancer survivors and their stories as well as a wine tasting and lecture by the Thames River Winery.
“We’re looking for ways to build energy, build hope and build a cure,” said Sails Up 4 Cancer Media Consultant Erica Lindberg of Lindberg Marking and Media.
Davis is also hoping a portion of their work will be able to focus on the local community and assist individuals and families in the Stonington area with cancer directly, whether through it's through emotional, knowledgeable or financial support. They also want to focus on education and prevention by working with Sails Up 4 Cancer member and 's Dr. Megan Marco.
“He [Davis] just wants to help other people,” Morrissey said.
