You Said It, Stonington: What's Up With the Road Repairs?

Check out what your neighbors have to say about the town's road repair project.

Patch user Lynn Kimmerle posted a photo on the Opinion Board last week that captured the 'artistry' of the current road repairs being done.

"It looks like the work was performed by a deranged graffiti artist," she wrote. "If there truly are that many cracks in the roadway, perhaps it's time to repave?"

First Selectman  Edward Haberek Jr. posted a reply: "We have a number of roads scheduled for repaving."

On Stonington-Mystic Patch's Facebook page, folks had a lot of opinions:

Michelle Lynn Doig Coope: That's what they did in our neighborhood last year along with a 'partial' paving fix.

Wendy Taylor Bury: I was going to post a picture of my street ...looks like a drunk got a hold of cans of thick, grainy black spray paint and had at it.

Former First Selectman Donald Maranell: Saves money and extends life of surface. The lines fade with time. To those it offends, well, the town is being fiscally responsible. If they put tar and pea stone down you'd be mad too, huh.

Rebecca Taylor: Jamie says: Wen, perhaps you are on to something??? You said it is your town's version of horizontal Modern Art... Well, go get some artists you know. Paint the streets. Create art from the repairs. Turn those squiggly black tar lines into a horizontal "Guernica" (Picasso) or a Horizontal "Scream" (Munch) or use those ugly lines to make the streets interesting, fun, and artistic. This is not a problem...this is an opportunity to make the streets of Stonington unique, friendly, and maybe even a small tourist attraction.... Of course, I could be wrong, but if anyone could figure out how to turn bad form with good function into excellent form with good function, it would be you.

And Lynn Kimmerle replied: Great idea, Wendy and Rebecca! Reminds me of that expression we used with our children...."Turn that frown upside down".

What do you think about the crack repairs? Art? Annoyance? Share your thoughts in the comments.
