At Stonington Town Hall Thursday evening, Selectwoman Glee McAnanly, 49, a Republican, with dozens of supporters including former US Congressman Rob Simmons, Sen. Cathy Cook and former First Selectman Bill Brown cheering her on, announced her candidacy for the town's highest elected office against incumbent First Selectman Democrat Edward Haberek Jr. in November.

When asked for comment on McAnanly's candidacy, Haberek said: "I look forward to discussing issues, our town's accomplishments this past term and specific ideas for the future."

Haberek is seeking a fourth term in office.

"We can do better. We can do great things," she said; the phrase may likely be her campaign's mantra.

McAnanly was elected selectwoman in 2009. She has served as a trustee of the Westerly Library, Stonington Prevention Council member, as well as a number of other committees and is an active member of the Groton Bible Chapel.

She told Patch in 2011 she believed the big issues and hcallenges the town faces include working to “maintain the infrastructure and town services without increasing taxes.”

She also said job creation was an important issue and said she wanted to focus on “mentoring and encouraging the next generation” to get “involved in the 27 various boards and commissions that really do contribute to the running of our town.”

McAnanly’s campaign website from 2011, ‘Go With Glee’ is still active.

McAnanly is a Pawcatuck resident. She was born in Omaha, NE; reared in Atlanta, GA; raised in Bridgewater, NJ. She’s lived in Pawcatuck since 1989. She graduated from Wheaton College and earned an MBA.

The married mother of two owns a business with her husband James.
