Rising Waters Cut Off Stonington Borough

With high tide still more than an hour away rising flood waters have cut off Stonington Borough from the rest of Stonington.

“We can’t get people out so we’re using the second floor of the fire house as a shelter for people still in the borough that can get there,” First Selectman Ed Haberek said.

Haberek said the town is dealing with multiple situations as the town begins to switch from dealing with hurricane winds to flooding.

“It’s pitch dark,” Haberek said. “More than 80 percent of the town is in darkness, we have the largest amount of customers per town without power.”

A 8:15 p.m, Connecticut Light & Power was reporting that more 7,500 people were without power.

According to Haberek there is widespread flooding in downtown Mystic and that area of town is basically impassable. The roof of the Quality Inn in Mystic blew off and several people staying there are being relocated to the shelter at Stonington High School. There about 100 people currently at the shelter.

In Pawcatuck, Donahue Park is flooded out and the water is about a foot away from the top of the bridge.

“We have another hour until high tide,” Haberek said. “It’s still very critical.”

Haberek urged people to stay off the roads as there are power lines and trees down.
