The Mystic Outdoor Arts Festival and What's it Like Being a Woman in the Military?

Five things to know today, August 6.

  1. Today’s going to be pretty nice! The National Weather forecasts a sunny day with a high around 77. Tonight may be partly cloudy with a low around 57.
  2. FEMA and DEEP will host meetings in Old Lyme on Thursday to discuss the “extensive changes to the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) which includes the gradual elimination of subsidized rates for Pre-FIRM structures (older homes built before the flood maps).” The will likely change your flood insurance and your wallet so unless you like surprises, you better check it out. The public meetings are from 5 to 8 p.m. at 333 Ferry Road in Old Lyme.
  3. The La Grua Center in the Borough offers great fitness programs nearly every day of the week and this weekend, they’re bringing you two events to enliven your brain. On Saturday, there’s an author book discussion with Carlos Eire and on Sunday, retired Navy Master Chief Michelle Mikulski will share her personal experiences living aboard an air craft carrier and being a woman in the military. You can check out the calendar here.
  4. Tonight’s the last installment of Summer Sounds Concert Series. The Mystic-Noank Community band will perform in the Mystic River Park beginning at 7 p.m. Admission is free. Bring your lawn chairs and blankets.
  5. Everyone's getting ready for the Mystic Outdoor Arts Festival. It's this weekend and their Facebook says that there will be more than 50 fine crafters displaying their creative works and there will be exciting children's art activities and a great array of food and beverage items.
