Singapore is home to the only night race in the Formula 1 Racing Series. The race was in late September and brought a host of high-end sports fan, celebrities and music stars, including Katy Perry and Maroon 5, who both performed that weekend. I was unable to attend the event because my baby was only 2 months old and it was too loud. But I could hear the racing from my balcony (see video).
Last year, I visited Singapore for the first time during F1 and I met rapper/actor Ludacris and famous chef Wolfgang Puck, as well as Star Wars film mogul George Lucas. I ended up flying home in First Class with Luda as well. (He’s quite short and not terribly friendly, but he was tired and we had a 4-hour delay leaving Singapore for Chicago via Hong Kong.)
I’m sure the stars were out this year as well, though I did not meet any. Katy Perry was seen in the pit garages. My husband, however, was lucky enough to be a guest for a $9,000 per ticket VIP event in air-conditioned tents on pit row and was escorted by an F1 photographer around the pit garages, taking photos for the F1 website and the Singapore Stock Exchange with mechanics and cars from the race.
The race course is set up right in downtown Singapore, which causes immense problems trying to get taxis around town. Many streets were blocked off as well as some MRT (public transit subway) stations. But it was a super cool event. The aerial race footage of the city really showcases how modern and beautiful Singapore is.
