Spot Zia’s In ‘Hope Springs’

It’s hard to miss in Stonington Borough with its purple façade and the sign with the cat whose eyes invite anyone walking by to step inside the door. But will the store make an appearance in the movie ? 

The movie, starring Meryl Streep, Tommy Lee Jones and Steve Carell, debuts in the area on August 8, 2012. Partly filmed in , the movie according to a press release from Mandate Pictures and the , follows a woman named Kay (Streep) seeking to spice up her marriage. Kay and her husband (Jones) go to the town of Great Hope Springs (Stonington Borough) to meet a relationship guru (Carell) for “an intense week of marriage and sex therapy.”

Owner Pam Cullis said Zia’s played a role during the night filming of the movie.

“We had big lights to backlight the window during the filming of the driving street scene,” Cullis said adding they also stayed late for the night filming at the which was turned into cinema.

Cullis said she signed a release in the event the sign to Zia’s made it into Hope Springs. There was also a scene where some extras walked out of the Zia’s door.

“Hoping we get seen a little,” Cullis said.

The shop at 129 Water St., sells a mix of simple clothing, jewelry and more all for under $10. Cullis established the shop in 2006 as a small clothes and accessories shop but after awhile she decided to close the shop and put everything on $10 clearance. The sale went so well Cullis turned the shop into the under $10 store it is today.
