Masonicare to Develop Retirement Community in Mystic

Masonicare plans to build an upscale retirement community on land off Coogan Boulevard in Stonington’s borough of Mystic.  Plans are for a 179-unit community of both independent and assisted living rental apartments to be called Masonicare at Mystic.

In making the announcement, Stephen B. McPherson, Masonicare’s President and CEO, said, “We are truly excited to bring a new residential retirement community to such a special area.  Mystic has so much to offer and we look forward to being part of it.”

Masonicare has partnered with Norwich-based BROM Builders, Inc.  “Masonicare shares our vision for a senior community that embraces all of the ambience and heritage that the Mystic region is known for,” said Joseph Mastronunzio, President of BROM Builders.

“It has been a pleasure working with the Masonicare organization through this process and welcome them to our community” stated First Selectman Edward Haberek Jr. “Masonicare at Mystic is an exciting endeavor which will provided needed services to the community, additional revenue for our town and new quality jobs for our residents. Masonicare has been a leader in independent and assisted care living in our state and I am looking forward to them being an integral part of our community.”

The construction of the community will be overseen by Klewin Construction of Stonington.  In addition to a variety of apartment styles and sizes, there will be gracious common areas for dining, social, cultural and wellness activities, including a pool.  “We believe Masonicare at Mystic will fill an unmet need in the area.  With all of the zoning and planning approvals already in place, we anticipate ground-breaking on May 22nd,” said Jon-Paul Venoit, Senior Vice President of Masonicare, “with our first phase of residents moving in in mid-2015.”

The site abuts 45 acres of open space on the former Coogan Farm, which was recently acquired by the Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center.  “When Masonicare at Mystic is completed, we expect to hire about 150 full- and part-time employees,” added Mr. Venoit.

A not-for-profit entity, Masonicare is one of the state’s oldest and largest organizations dedicated to seniors and healthcare with established campuses in Wallingford and Newtown.  Masonicare also operates a statewide homecare and hospice agency whose southeastern Connecticut services are currently provided out of East Lyme.  Established in 1978, BROM Builders is an award-winning, family-owned builder and developer of residential properties in the southeastern part of the state and beyond.
