Using Visuals as Effective Communication

Without visuals, most marketing communications would be ineffective. Visual elements serve to capture attention, make content more interesting, help readers digest difficult or bland material, and aid in further explaining content. Perhaps the most important job of any visual is to tell a story. So how do you make sure your business is using visuals to effectively engage your audience?

For websites, the rule of thumb we use at our CT marketing agency is if you take away all the text from a web page, is the visitor still able to determine who you are and what you offer? The process of developing visual content for your website starts with a well-designed logo that tells visitors who you are. The other visual elements on site – photos, graphics, videos, etc. – help facilitate the story you want to tell.

Infographics are a great option for displaying information in a format that is easily digestible and shareable. Imagine that you have a list of statistics that would be valuable to your customer base. What sounds like the more effective and engaging option: a bullet list of your main points typed out in Microsoft Word, or a well-designed infographic with pictures, graphics, and other elements to support your ideas? Images, infogrpahics and videos can all be optimized for SEO. In fact, web pages with YouTube videos embedded have been shown to have better organic rankings, and YouTube videos optimized for SEO often appear near the top of search results pages for relevant searches.
