Deck the Walls, a community event to be held on Dec. 5, 6, &7, has traditionally featured donations from local merchants, nurseries, designers and artists of holiday wreaths and tabletop trees.  Past contributors have included Pot of Green florists in Pawcatuck, members of the Stonington Garden Club,Verdant Floral Design, Michael McKinley Architects, Pequot Plant Farm, and others. Local artist, Susan Scala, has donated a wreath each year with miniature paintings of “Stonington Sunsets.”  New this year is the category of gingerbread and several local bakeries and individuals have embraced the challenge of creating gingerbread houses modeled after local landmarks.  Zest bakery will create a replica of the Velvet Mill in Stonington, Vesta Bakery of Westerly is creating a gingerbread rendition of the Captain Nathaniel B. Palmer House, and another entry sure to draw interest is of the Old Lighthouse Museum by Mollie Burton and Cheryl Purvis.  They are creating not only a replica of the Old Lighthouse Museum, but are determined to include the proposed new addition that has been the subject of some controversy.  Wreaths will include entries from Hana Floral Design, Kentford Farm and Grand & Water Antiques. MASH, the Mystic Area Shelter and Hospitality organization is also participating and all proceeds from their entry will be donated back to MASH. The Palmer House will also host a variety of merchants and unusual holiday crafts and wares.  Benjamin Lathrop will be featuring his hooked holiday stockings, Jeffrey P’an will have hand blown glass ornaments, and many other items suitable for gift giving and stocking stuffing.  Refreshments throughout the weekend will be available to visitors. The event is run as a silent auction and the Society expects more than 50 entries of wreaths, trees, and gingerbread houses.
