Let Freedom Ring - Even When It Shows No Appreciation of the Horrors of the Past

In the last Presidential election, I cast my ballot for Senator John McCain - could not vote against an American Veteran and War Hero. To those who might doubt that, do a little research and find a letter I authored that was published in NEWSWEEK in 2008 refuting columnist Maureen Dowd and advocating Senator McCain for the Presidency.

Flash forward to today. While walking in to the Mystic Post Office, I observed a information table staffed by a very amiable and well spoken young man whose obvious intent is to unseat President Obama. I then noted that the posters promoting the intent were , to me, absolutely horrendous. Every photo depiction of the President had been altered and a Hitler mustache added.

I informed the young man that (and I enjoy the President Reagan paraphrasing) "Sir, you may not like or support President Obama, but he is no Adolph Hitler". The response rocked me - "All Dictators are the same !". I asked him if he had ever heard of the Holocaust - and at that point he ignored me and began addressing another passerby.

I continued on my way reminding myself that the young man's and I right to speak and express freely is a blessing of our Nation - just wish understanding of what a tyrant truly is was expressed in his.

Post Script- As of today, I will vote for President Obama due to his having given Seal Team 6 the go to off bin Laden and because  his political opposition  has no appreciation of history. And, if anyone ever opposed that informational table in front of the Post Office.I would be first in line to defend it.
