Paul Burgess Elected As Borough Warden

More Than 300 Residents Cast Votes In The Borough Election

Stonington Borough residents overwhelmingly elected Republican Paul Burgess Borough Warden Monday night.

Burgess received 226 votes while incumbent Warden Donald Maranell (D) received 78.

“I’m honored to be elected,” Burgess said. “It’s very humbling.”

Burgess is the current Burgess of Emergency Management, Sidewalks and Street Lights Commissioner. A borough resident since 2003, Burgess believes his business and environmental engineering background will serve borough residents well. During his campaign Burgess had said his top priorities would be customer service, road projects and other .

“We have to get to work,” Burgess said.

Incumbent Maranell, who served two two-year terms, said he guessed four years was enough.

“The voters have chosen,” Maranell said, before going to congratulate Burgess.

Incumbent Burgesses Kathryn Nason Burchenal (D), Edward McCreary (D), Howard Park (R), and Robert Scala (D), were re-elected, and Michael Adair (R) and Amy Nicholas (D) were elected to their first-terms as burgesses. The only incumbent burgess to not be re-elected was unaffiliated Burgess Jeffrey Callahan. Peg Abramson (R) and Charles LaCour (R), seeking their first-terms as burgesses were also defeated.

Thomas Kasprzak (D) defeated Brian Krafjack (R) for position of clerk-treasurer by 13 votes and Lisa Coleman (D) and Tom Sanford (R), the only two candidates to be unopposed, were elected as tax assessor and tax collector respectively.

When the polls at the closed at 8 p.m., 309 people had voted out of the 703 registered voters, or roughly 44 percent.
