Pawcatuck Elementary Schools Under Code Yellow Briefly

Teachers kept students inside today after a disturbance was reported.

West Vine Street-West Broad Street Schools Principal Alicia Dawe imposed a Code Yellow at West Broad and West Vine Schools Friday afternoon after Stonington Police notified her of a "domestic disturbance" in the area.

"It was a precautionary measure," she said. "At no time were children in any immediate harm."

Dawe said the Code Yellow was lifted after about 30 minutes but in the meantime she notified parents via the school messenger system that it was in place. Her message read:

"I wanted to make you aware that due to an outside disturbance, we were in a "Code Yellow" at both West Vine and West Broad Street Schools. Children are safe, and we have since returned to our regular routine but will not be participating in outdoor activities."

Stonington schools have three elevated risk levels: Code Yellow is least severe and teachers are instructed to stay in the classrooms, with doors shut/locked, and to keep teaching. Code Red is used in the event of a lockdown and Code Blue is used in the event of an evacuation.
