Stonington Will Not Start School Friday

A Message Sent Out Thursday Morning Said School Will Not Begin September 2.

Students in the Stonington Public School system will not begin school until after Labor Day.

A message sent out to parents Thursday morning stated: "Schools will be closed on Friday, September 2, 2011.  While we remain hopeful that roads and buildings will allow us to open on Tuesday, we will be in contact with safety and utility representatives throughout the weekend and will communicate with families on Monday.."

Just when school will begin, may be the second most asked question in town. The first, of course, is “when will the power be back?”

Superintendent Leanne Masterjoseph, said Tuesday, that power was being sporadically restored to schools and the school system was working with the town fire marshals to gain approval for schools to be accessed for staff and students.

“My criteria concerning schools remains the same,” Masterjoseph said. “Student safety must come first.  I need to be certain that facilities are functioning in accordance with safe practices: proper lighting, fire alarms, etc.  I also need to be confident that the conditions students encounter at bus stops are safe: free of downed wires, for example.”
