Hurricane Sandy Updates From Stonington's First Selectman – Tuesday Oct. 30 Evening

I am designating November 16, 2012 be declared Halloween in Stonington Day.

I wanted to update you on latest from Hurricane Sandy. Crews worked today to open blocked roads with the CL&P Crew. Personally today I expressed my displeasure with the amount of CL&P Tree/Utility personnel that was sent to towns. Out of 500 crews, New London County was given 40 Utility Crews and 17 Tree Crews. Today One Tree/Utility Crew were in town with several crews tied up on Liberty Street awaiting authorization to fix telephone pole incident.

I expressed my irritation to CL&P President Brian Quinlan, Southeast Connecticut Operations Manager, Lt. Governor Wyman, Congressman Courtney and the media. Since the Governor stated last night that New London and Stonington were hardest hit by Hurricane force winds, I demanded that we get more personnel to address these blocked roads with downed power lines. We had 65 total issues in town as a result of the storm, 32 blocked roads and the remaining roads (seen below) are a result of wires down. Only three roads with wires down were opened today by the one CL&P crew. I am insistent this be corrected by CL&P.

While I'm all for the values that the Ten Commandments gives us, I also don't want to be defenselessRead More because someone who chooses not to follow them is putting my life in danger. The Right to Bear Arms was created by men, for the purpose of the people of this country having a means to defend ourselves from people who mean us harm, or from a government who might seek to take away our arms for nefarious purposes. A very great man once said, "I may not agree with what you say, but I will defend with my life your right to say it." Just out of curiosity, if someone were to invade your home, and attack you and your family, putting your lives in danger, what would you be willing to do to defend your lives?

Who gave us this right to bear arms? Men. The only God given law was the Ten Commandments. One ofRead More them explicitly says "Thou shall not kill."

I agree. The bottom line is we're all defenseless if we are deprived of our right to bear arms. GunRead More restrictions do nothing to prevent criminals from getting and using guns. They simply impede law-abiding citizens from getting and using them to defend ourselves from the criminals. I don't want to be stuck at a gunfight with nothing more than a cell phone camera.
